+ | | colspan="3" | Von der Variante Typ IX C/40 wurden von den 95 begonnenen Einheiten zwischen Juli 1942 und Mai 1944 nur 87 Boote in Dienst gestellt. Im Grunde war der Unterschied zur vorhergehenden Version des Typs [[IX C]] eine weitere Steigerung des Brennstoffvorrats auf 214.22 t. Zur Unterbringung der Brennstoffzellen wurde vom Raum zwischen den Hüllen größerer Gebrauch gemacht. Die maximale Überwasserfahrstrecke vergrößerte sich um ca. 1500 - 1800 Seemeilen. Die Lieferverträge für weitere 76 Einheiten wurden 1944 zugunsten der neuen Elektrounterseeboote vom Typ [[XXI]] und [[XXIII]] annulliert, zu deren Bau man alle Ressourcen der deutschen Schiffbauindustrie verfügbar gemacht. Die Boote [[U 170]], [[U 190]], [[U 530]], [[U 539]], [[U 804]], [[U 805]], [[U 858]], [[U 866]], [[U 867]], [[U 868]], [[U 1232]] und [[U 1233]] wurden mit einer [[Schnelltauchback]] ausgerüstet. Dies war eine starke Einengung und Einschnürung des Oberdecks zum schnelleren Tauchen. | ||
