Um 16:43 Uhr schoß Trojer auf eines der Schiffe. Dieser Torpedo traf die Walter Q. Gresham an Backbord. U 221 hörte noch Sinkgeräusche, wendete sich dann dem nächsten Schiff zu. Der Dampfer versank innerhalb einer Stunde über das Heck. 23 Besatzungsmitglieder und 5 Artilleristen kamen ums Leben. Der Kapitän, 18 Besatzungsmitglieder, 21 Artilleristen und 2 Passagiere wurden von den britischen Korvetten HMS Pennywort (K.111) und HMS Anemone (K.48) gerettet und in Gourock (Großbritannien) an Land gesetzt. |
