Die 3. U-Flottille wurde am 01.07.1937 unter dem Namen 3. U-Flottille Lohs, als Ausbildungs- später als Frontflottille, in Kiel aufgestellt. Nach dem 31.12.1939 wurden die bestehenden Flottillen zusammengelegt. Boote aus der 3. U-Flottille Lohs, der 1. U-Flottille Weddigen und der 5. U-Flottille Emsmann wurden zur 1. U-Flottille vereinigt. Die 3 U-Flottille Lohs bekam die Feldpostnummer M - 36 094.
