| colspan="3" | [[U 508]] sichtete am 01.12.1942 um 16:04 Uhr die Rauchwolke eines Dampfers und tauchte, um 18:46 Uhr, zum Angriff ab. Doch kurz vor dem Schuß zackte das Schiff ab und U 508 mußte sich neu Vorsetzen. Am 02.12.1942 um 01:43 Uhr schoß Staats einen Torpedo auf den Dampfer. Dieser Torpedo traf die City of  Bath nach 43 Sekunden. Das Schiff sackte achtern weg, und sank nach einer Explosion um 01:55 Uhr. 3 Besatzungsmitglieder kamen ums Leben. Der Kapitän und 27 Besatzungsmitglieder landeten mit ihren Rettungsbooten am 05.12.1942 in Paolo Seco (Trinidad). 52 Besatzungsmitglieder wurden vom britischen Dampfer City of Dunkirk gerettet und ebenfalls auf Trinidad an Land gesetzt.
